Alarm in UK and US over possible Iran-Russia nuclear deal
Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are concerned about any secret arms-buying agreements during talks in Washington about Ukraine.
Britain and America US have both raised the possibility that Russia has given nuclear secrets to Iran in exchange for Tehran providing Russia with ballistic missiles to attack Ukraine.
On Friday in Washington DC, Keir Starmer and US President Joe Biden reached an understanding at their summit meeting that two countries are deepening their cooperation; even at a time when Iran may soon attain enough uranium enrichment for building its first nuclear bomb.
British sources have reported that there have been concerns raised regarding Iran’s dealings in nuclear technology as part of a deeper alliance between Tehran and Moscow.
Last Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued the same warning during his trip to London for meetings with British MP David Lammy and US ambassador Richard Grenell, though few paid much heed to it due to their main focus being the announcement by Washington of Iran’s shipment of missiles to Russia.
Blinken charged Russia and Iran of engaging in destabilising activities which create greater insecurity globally, such as providing technologies sought by Iran on matters related to nuclear issues or space information. He accused both nations of participating in activities which contributed to destabilisation through deceitful acts which increased global instability.
Britain, France and Germany issued warnings last week that Iran’s stockpile of highly-enriched Uranium continued to expand without credible civilian justification – amassing over four “significant quantities” that each could potentially be used to construct an explosive nuclear weapon.
Iran may possess enough technical know-how and resources to develop nuclear weapons rapidly; using experienced Russian experts or expertise could speed up this process; however, Iran claims not to be working on bomb development at this time.
Iran had signed an agreement in 2015 to suspend their production of nuclear weaponry in exchange for sanctions relief from western nations – only for Donald Trump, former US president and now Republican presidential candidate, to pull back out in 2018.
Iran managed to counter any sanction imposed against them by violating agreed limits on how much enriched uranium it could possess.
Western concerns that Iran could soon produce an atomic bomb have long dominated Middle Eastern politics, exacerbating tensions that have reached new levels following Israel’s ongoing assault against Hamas in Gaza and Hamas’ subsequent response from within Gaza itself.
Iran and its allies in Lebanon – Hezbollah in particular being seen as an ally of Hamas – present an immediate danger to Jerusalem, with their nuclear program seen as an immediate threat by many in Jerusalem.
Iran immediately joined in Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine with its supply of Shahed delta-winged drones to Moscow and helping build an arsenal factory to produce more bombs for targets inside Ukraine. Additionally, in April of this year Iran attempted a Russian-style drone and missile strike targeting Israel which was mostly stopped thanks to help from both US and UK allies.
Russia and Iran, two longstanding adversaries historically, have recently formed closer ties in their struggle against the West, becoming more united as part of an “axis of upheaval” that includes China and North Korea – signalling a return to an era of competition between states similar to that of Cold War era.
U.S. Secretary of State Blankenship told reporters in London earlier this week that U.S. intelligence had found evidence demonstrating Iran had launched its initial batch of Fath-360 ballistic missiles with ranges between 100 to 128 miles (about 120 kilometers), which were traveling through Russia.
The transfer of these missiles has caused a drastic shift in Western views, particularly regarding Ukraine’s ongoing conflict and targeting Ukrainian cities and towns along its frontlines with missile strikes. Furthermore, dramatic economic sanctions increase have taken effect and new sanctions against Russia were instituted as a response. Send feedback | Sidebars >> History
